Fantasy F1 2010

by Gareth Crew on February 28, 2010

Do you remember the old Formula 1 days? You know those ones where you pretty much knew who would win, it’ll be Schumacher, Hakkinen or perhaps (if it was a really bad year) Irvine.

Well, in 2010 those days have gone. They’ve disappeared like your pension. They’ve disappeared like using brand new plastic bags each time you’re shopping. And they’ve made it a whole of a lot more fun.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, on Neptune, with your fingers in your ear saying la la la la la…. You know what’s been occurring in the off season. The Chin has returned to take on the new ones, in a Hon, Bra, sorry Mercedes.

It’s just too exciting a prospect to miss, and in only a couple of short weeks all of the kids (and Rubens and Mark) will be out to rough up the old man.

Then, you have Lotus and Virgin returning too. And possibly Senna…and well…absolutely anything can happen. All we need is Rossi to pack in MotoGP and Loeb to stop rallying and the Fantasy would be complete. But, I’m totally settling for what we’ve got.

And so, after spending time at the CERN institute, crunching the numbers and spending months and months trying to make sense of the new pack, I’m here to officially launch our new Fantasy F1 Competition. With added new rules and rankings. Mike’s got his pivot tables running, so here we go:

You can only enter the competition up to the Thursday evening before the first race. You must enter by adding your comments to this post and you have to do the following:

Select 1 Chassis
Select 3 Drivers
And you have only £280 to spend:

The prices:

Red Bull £100
Ferrari £90

Renault £70
Force India £70
Toro Rosso £65
Lotus F1 £60

Drivers
Jenson Button £100
Lewis Hamilton £100
Michael Schumacher £99
Nico Rosberg £89
Sebas Vettel £99
Mark Webber £98
Felipe Massa £98
Fernando Alonso £98
Rubens Barrichello £97
Nick Hulkenberg £96
Robert Kubica £97
Vitaly Petrov £50
Adrian Sutil £60
Viantonio Liuzzi £45
Sebas Buemi £80
Jamie Alguersuari £60
Jarno Truli £65
Heikki Kovalainen £65
Bruno Senna £50
Jose Marie Lopez £50
Timo Glock £65
Lucas Di Grassi £50
Pedro De La Rosa £65
Kamui Kobayashi £75

So, for instant, I’m picking

1)    Schumacher £99
2)    Liuzzi £45
3)    Force India £70
4)    Di Gassi £50

That means I’ve spent £264 of my budget. Phew!

Clear as mud? Excellent. Get those calculators out and pick your team. The winner, as Alex will know, gets a prize and it’s a right laugh!

If you’re still not to speed on all that’s been happening this winter, check out our super-professional podcast.

And lets count down to the first race – I can’t wait!

And now for the disclaimer – this is a home made project – so Chris, Gareth and Mike don’t bear any responsibility for mistakes, inaccuracies or anything that goes wrong throughout the season – we’re all here to have some fun :)

Drivers of the decade

by Gareth Crew on December 4, 2009

Can you believe 10 years have come and gone oh so quickly? 10 years. We started the decade all full of hope and joy, didn’t know what an iPod was and twitter was what your Nan and your Aunt did (see how concise I melded ten years of human endeavour and technological development into a small paragraph? I rule!) and F1 was going through a golden age. Well, it seems looking at 2010’s list, it’s about to enter another one, but as the decade’s coming to an end, it’s time to reflect and look at the drivers of the decade. Or I should say, my drivers of the decade…

10) Juan Pablo Montoya
Fat, Lazy and very insane – Monty was a breath of fresh air when he arrived in F1. He came on the back of two CART championships and proceeded to rough up all of the front runners almost instantaneously. Although, like most geniuses, he was flawed and after signing for McLaren went into meltdown and cleared off to eat hot dogs in NASCAR.

9) David Coulthard
Not just a square-jawed Scott who argues with Eddie Jordan on the TV, Coulthard was a mean driver in his time. Spending most of the decade as Hakkinen’s wingman in the McLaren team, he was overshadowed by his enigmatic team mate and a McLaren that was sometimes a bit rubs. With a bit of an ability to wilt under pressure, it was a shame he never got the plaudits that he deserved. Quite funny though.

8) Rubens Barrichello
The first one that’s still racing! With the whole beard or no beard and comb over thing going on, Barrichello is the stalwart of the F1 grid, and, with no dominating team mate, proved that he’s still got it andwith a Williams drive, will be around for a few years yet…

7) Kimi Rakkionen
Could he be the only driver to win F1 and World Rally Championships? No. Because has is as lazy as he is monosyllabic. The Anthony Gobert of the F1 world, Kimi is as famed for his partying as is for his talent. If he focused a bit more on racing and not on moaning about his pay packet, eating ice lollies and looking glum, he could well have challenged The Chin for greatness. But he hasn’t. I wouldn’t feel that sorry for him though, he’s a Formula 1 Champion, got millions and millions of pounds and can wear funny hats. It’s a tough life.

6) Jacques Villeneuve
Are you sure? Yes, think I am actually. Villeneuve burst onto the scene in the late 1990s. Looking more like a chartered account, the son of one of the very, very best challenged eyebrows Hill in his very first year and took the title in the next. He then (are you reading this Lewis) made a few mistakes in his choice of career (can you remember the awful Bar with the terrible paint scheme?) and failed into obscurity. He did take no rubbish from Schumacher and did produce moment of genius and did have crazy hair in a time when everyone was supposed to toe the line. And more fun that that – he may be back in 2010.

5) Alex Zanardi
Well, he wasn’t much of a success in Formula 1 from 2000 – 2009 but he is an inspiration to anyone and everyone on the planet. Another top CART driver, Zanardi came to F1 with Williams in 1999 and didn’t go much. So, in 2000 went back to CART and continued in 2001. In Germany, on September 15th 2001 he crashed exiting the pits and hit a fellow competitor. Critically injured, he lost both his legs and almost his life. But, Zanardi survived and using prosthetic limbs, returned to car racing in 2004  in the World Touring Car Championship, winning 5 races. When he won his first race ironically in Germany, even Andy Prilaux, his fierce competitor said he couldn’t help but shed tears of joy.
Zanardi continued to race until the end of 2009 winning a race in Brno. He’s now retired from car racing and is turning his attention to hand cycling where he intends to race in the Olympics in 2012. A brilliant and inspiring man.

4) Lewis Hamilton
Yay! Another Brit! Lewis Hamilton, love him or loathe him (and as he’s successful, good looking, a liar and going out with a Pussycat Doll, there’s a lot to hate about him) there’s no doubt that he’s dripping with talent and is fast as anything. Runner-up in his first year (just!) and winner in an amazing finale just 12 months later, he’s one of the fastest drivers on the current F1 grid.
With a rubbish car this year, he was not in the battle at the start of the season, but after recovering from lying, Hamilton burst into action, with some truly remarkable drives. If he keeps going, I’m sure he’s going to be F1 Champion again.

3) Fernando Alonso
The only man to beat Schumacher with equal machinery?  Yes. But probably Flavio cheated with some sort of nitrous injection and oil slick stuff or something. He endured a torrid time after winning two titles and jumping ship to McLaren, but has always proved that he’s the quickest driver out there, as he has been probably for half the decade.

2) Mika Hakkinen
Before Alonso there was Hakkinen. Bubbly compared to other Finns, Hakkinen was the world champion when the decade started, and pushed Schumacher harder than any Brit would want to do. He was so fast that Schumey even said that the battles he had with Mika were probably the best he ever had. Which is a compliment.

1) Michael Schumacher
Well, who else, really? I do hope he comes back for 2010

So, do you like my list? I bet you don’t! Why not let me know who you think should be in the top 10…

Off season round up – there’s a lot going on!!

November 6, 2009

So, I take it you’ve been keeping up to date with what’s been going on? No, not Jenson winning the world title, Mike took care of that, I mean the off season, that is very nearly as interesting as the recent on-season. Let’s break it down:
1.    Toyota have pulled out
2.    Bridgestone have pulled out (at [...]

What a season!

November 2, 2009

It has been a classic F1 season, one of the very best I can remember, and thanks to Chris and Gareth for this site, it’s been good fun as well.
Abu Dhabi provided a fitting finale, with the most spectacular track I have ever seen. And how fitting that F1’s new world order of Red Bull [...]

Yeah Baby!

October 20, 2009

It’s taken me two days to get my breath back. What a race! Poor old Mark Webber, who cruised to a comfortable win, didn’t get a look in, as the cameras focused on career-best drives from Sebastien, Lewis and Jenson. It was scintillating, edge of the seat stuff that culminated in Jenson and Brawn winning [...]

Vettel Wings It!

October 4, 2009

A dominant win for Seb Vettel means neither championship was decided at Suzuka today. He was followed home by a very strong Jarno Trulli with Lewis Hamilton coming third in a McLaren denied Kers for much of the race.
This is how it all affected the really important championship:
1st Alex Garlick 492.5
2nd Gareth Crew 441.5
3rd Mike [...]

Hamilton in Control

September 27, 2009

Lewis Hamilton drove the perfect race from pole position to score his second victory of the season, although much of the talk was around Jenson Button’s strengthening position for the world championship. This race really closed up some of the scores in our little fantasy league, and we now have just five points covering positions [...]

Best F1 Track?

September 27, 2009

I have just been watching the Formula 1 from Singapore, and maybe it is the elation at our guy Lewis bringing home the win (huzzah!), but I have decided next season I am going to try to make it to more races live.
Question is, which?
If you had to choose your top three, which would it [...]

Best era for Formula 1?

September 25, 2009

In a bid to cheer Gareth up, let’s talk about something more interesting than the cheating **…?? who are currently involved in the sport.
What has been your favourite era in F1? I thought long and hard about this, and eventually came up with the mid 80’s and the turbo period. Here’s a story from then:
It [...]

Are you depressed?

September 24, 2009

So, it’s Singapore this weekend. It’s under lights you know. Button is on the verge of winning the World title, and that will be a great achievement in the Brawn that was nothing at the beginning of the year. But, why am I feeling so sad about the whole thing?
Well, it’s Flavio’s fault, isn’t it? [...]
