Fantasy F1 2010

by Gareth Crew on February 28, 2010

Do you remember the old Formula 1 days? You know those ones where you pretty much knew who would win, it’ll be Schumacher, Hakkinen or perhaps (if it was a really bad year) Irvine.

Well, in 2010 those days have gone. They’ve disappeared like your pension. They’ve disappeared like using brand new plastic bags each time you’re shopping. And they’ve made it a whole of a lot more fun.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, on Neptune, with your fingers in your ear saying la la la la la…. You know what’s been occurring in the off season. The Chin has returned to take on the new ones, in a Hon, Bra, sorry Mercedes.

It’s just too exciting a prospect to miss, and in only a couple of short weeks all of the kids (and Rubens and Mark) will be out to rough up the old man.

Then, you have Lotus and Virgin returning too. And possibly Senna…and well…absolutely anything can happen. All we need is Rossi to pack in MotoGP and Loeb to stop rallying and the Fantasy would be complete. But, I’m totally settling for what we’ve got.

And so, after spending time at the CERN institute, crunching the numbers and spending months and months trying to make sense of the new pack, I’m here to officially launch our new Fantasy F1 Competition. With added new rules and rankings. Mike’s got his pivot tables running, so here we go:

You can only enter the competition up to the Thursday evening before the first race. You must enter by adding your comments to this post and you have to do the following:

Select 1 Chassis
Select 3 Drivers
And you have only £280 to spend:

The prices:

Team
Mclaren £100
Mercedes £100
Red Bull £100
Ferrari £90
Williams £70
Renault £70
Force India £70
Toro Rosso £65
Lotus F1 £60
Virgin £50
Sauber £70

Drivers
Jenson Button £100
Lewis Hamilton £100
Michael Schumacher £99
Nico Rosberg £89
Sebas Vettel £99
Mark Webber £98
Felipe Massa £98
Fernando Alonso £98
Rubens Barrichello £97
Nick Hulkenberg £96
Robert Kubica £97
Vitaly Petrov £50
Adrian Sutil £60
Viantonio Liuzzi £45
Sebas Buemi £80
Jamie Alguersuari £60
Jarno Truli £65
Heikki Kovalainen £65
Bruno Senna £50
Jose Marie Lopez £50
Timo Glock £65
Lucas Di Grassi £50
Pedro De La Rosa £65
Kamui Kobayashi £75

So, for instant, I’m picking

1)    Schumacher £99
2)    Liuzzi £45
3)    Force India £70
4)    Di Gassi £50

That means I’ve spent £264 of my budget. Phew!

Clear as mud? Excellent. Get those calculators out and pick your team. The winner, as Alex will know, gets a prize and it’s a right laugh!

If you’re still not to speed on all that’s been happening this winter, check out our super-professional podcast.

And lets count down to the first race – I can’t wait!

And now for the disclaimer – this is a home made project – so Chris, Gareth and Mike don’t bear any responsibility for mistakes, inaccuracies or anything that goes wrong throughout the season – we’re all here to have some fun :)

Alrighty then! Let’s get this show on the road! See, unlike the Podcast I’m sticking with what I selected. I think….

1) Schumacher £99
2) Liuzzi £45
3) Force India £70
4) Di Gassi £50

Chris (another one) February 28, 2010 at 12:19 pm

OK, I’m going for:

Dan Rous February 28, 2010 at 2:50 pm

Here’s my choices:

Lotus F1 (£60)

Hamilton (£100)
Trulli (£65)

Think thats £275. The other £5 can cover extra fuel!

Game on….

Mike CJ February 28, 2010 at 4:22 pm

Here we go:

Buemi 80
Petrov 50
Liuzzi 45
McLaren 100

Total 275

Jane W February 28, 2010 at 5:03 pm

Right, Im going for…

Damian P February 28, 2010 at 5:53 pm

and the winner is:

Ferrari £90
Kobayashi £75
Kovalainen £65
Senna £50

280 of the Queens pounds.

Chris March 1, 2010 at 3:48 am

Aaargh! Can’t decide :)

I wanted Virgin, Button, Hamilton – but I have to choose a 3rd driver and there are none for 30 quid (unless I pull on a jump suit and have a go myself).

Virgin £50
Hamilton £100
Kobayashi £75
Senna £50

£280 – £275 = £5

Some interesting team selections already, going to be a great season :)

J Chavez March 1, 2010 at 4:24 am

Mercedes 100
Bruno Senna 50
Lucas Di Grassi 50
Kamui Kobayashi 75

Total: 275

AM March 2, 2010 at 3:08 pm

Sauber £70
Rosberg £89
Liuzzi £45
Kobayashi £75

total: 279

Mark Redford March 3, 2010 at 6:23 am

Senna £50
£275

Dee Harrison March 3, 2010 at 9:30 am

Force India

Gareth March 3, 2010 at 2:00 pm

@Mark Redford you can have the same team – this goes for everybody :)

We will have tie break/bonus points through the year :)

Alex Garlick March 7, 2010 at 3:39 am

Ok so i’m back to defend my title! Actually not sure it’s going to be possible this year, it’s a really tough choice. Having had a bit of a flick through this months Autosport i’m none the wiser about the new guys. Anyway here goes

Chassis – Maclaren
Drivers – Glock
– Sutil
– Di Grassi
That comes to £275

I would like to say big thanks to all the guys that organise this competition, it’s great fun and points do make prizes! I’m using my prize from last years win to go to the Turkish GP later this year :-))

Good luck to you all

Kim Sheader March 9, 2010 at 7:37 am

Chassis: Ferrari £90
Drivers: Kobayashi £75
De La Rosa £65
Petrov £50
total: £280

It hurts to support Ferrari in any way but don’t have much choice!

Michael Bridge March 9, 2010 at 9:54 am

Manufacturer – McLaren
Driver 1 – Truli
Driver 2 – Sutil
Driver 3 – Di Grassi

Jimbob March 9, 2010 at 4:19 pm

ok here is my team :
Chassis : Williams £70
Driver 1 : Hamilton £100
2 : Sutil £60
3 : Lopez £50
Thats all my 280 squid well spent

Vic March 10, 2010 at 7:16 am

I have succeeded in leading my teams to bottom of the league in fantasty football numerous times. Thought I’d see if I could have the same success here…

Manufacturer – McLaren
Driver 1 – Kobayashi
Driver 2 – Sutil
Driver 3 – Liuzzi

Lauren Paines March 10, 2010 at 7:39 am

OK here goes:
Team – Ferarri £ 90
Driver 1 – Truli £65
Driver 2 – Sutil £60
Driver 3 – De La Rosa £ 65

I had better do well – or you’re fired Gareth.

Enigma March 10, 2010 at 9:34 am

How many points for which positions?

Gareth March 10, 2010 at 12:02 pm

@Enigma – the points are the same as awarded in this year’s Championship – it makes Mike’s adding easier – are you going to enter? :)

Enigma March 10, 2010 at 2:39 pm

I’m entering yes – Hamilton, Kobayashi, Ferrari (265 all-together)
if I’m not allowed to have only 2 drivers, then I will choose de la Rosa, Kobayashi, Liuzzi and Ferrari (275). Is the first one okay?

Enigma March 10, 2010 at 2:43 pm

What’s the prize?

Mike CJ March 11, 2010 at 3:40 pm

You have to have three drivers Enigma, so I’ll take your second option. We’re still working on the prizes, but they’ll be good!

Ian March 12, 2010 at 1:23 am

A potentially invalid submission but just in case Gareth allows this to sneak in:

maclaren 100
liuzzi 45
kobayashi 75
sutil 60

a pathetic bunch but humourous to follow!

Paul March 12, 2010 at 8:04 pm

Ah shoot Graham, I must have missed a tweet, any chance I can still get in on this ? Purty please ?

Renault £70
Sebas Vettel £99
Adrian Sutil £60
Viantonio Liuzzi £45

Agonizing compromises abound but I got the lot for £274.
With the spare £6, I’m buying fuzzy dice for the lads.

Gareth March 13, 2010 at 4:21 am

I reckon you can sneak in Paul – welcome back!

Now, to the qualifying :)

Enigma March 13, 2010 at 5:40 am

That’s a bit unfair isn’t it?

Mike March 25, 2010 at 7:37 am

A very late submssion – if allowed:

Ferrari – £90
Rosberg – £89
Petrov – £50
Liuzzi – £45
Total £274

Gareth March 25, 2010 at 7:44 am

So – think Mike’s allowed? Perhaps with a point penalty as he’s a late addition :)

Mike CJ March 25, 2010 at 8:23 am

Trouble is, that’s a winning combination based on first race results. Let’s have some input from others, but it would be galling if Mike went ahead and won the competition.

Gareth March 25, 2010 at 9:44 am

How about a 25 point penalty for missing the first round?

Davey T March 25, 2010 at 1:02 pm

I agree with Mike CJ. All Mike has done is copy my winning team from the first round. If everyone waited to the second race before choosing a team we would all have the same one!

Charlie March 25, 2010 at 11:52 pm

A very very very late entry, will accept points deduction and ridicule :)

Mclaren
Kamui Kobayashi
Timo Glock
Bruno Senna

Charlie March 25, 2010 at 11:55 pm

okay so i cant add up either! now for my real entry…

Mclaren
Adrian Sutil
Timo Glock
Bruno Senna

Chris March 26, 2010 at 6:48 am

Welcome to the party Charlie (late, but still welcome)

I think we need to allow people to join in, just give some sort of penalty.

Thankfully I don’t think F1 is so predictable that the winner of the first round will go right to the end, but we can’t have two identical teams either as there is only one prize (as of now)?

Mike CJ March 27, 2010 at 12:18 am

I spoke to the guvnors here and the decision is that we can accept your late entries, but you won’t score points for the race you missed.

So welcome aboard and make sure you catch all the bonus points you can to make up points!
